An Editorial Picnic Style Engagement Session in Memphis, Tennessee
“Editorial” style photography can evoke the idea of stiff poses, overly staged scenes, and an overly serious mood, but I’m here with proof (courtesy of Caitlin and Edwin’s picnic engagement session at Shelby Farms Park) that an editorial engagement session can feel light and fun, even with props and staging.
Thinking about bringing props to your photoshoot? Take notes from Caitlin and Edwin and look for used, vintage items or things you already own. Aside from anything edible, there’s no need to buy anything new, especially if you aren’t going to use them again or they’re super trendy. Secondhand glassware has been popular at weddings, and is a little sturdier for an outdoor picnic, and books and baskets are easy to thrift without worrying too much about quality.
Caitlin and Edwin also brought their own 35mm camera to take some photos on, which made for some really cute, candid pictures on my end. I love the way these two incorporated props that created scenes rather than poses. These photos feel more like I stumbled across a couple on a date rather than a staged photoshoot.
